Role

Designer & Technical Lead

Ukrainian Dance World is an international nonprofit connecting and documenting Ukrainian folk dance communities across the diaspora. They had an older WordPress site that didn't reflect their scope or serve as an effective resource. The brief was to completely reimagine the platform as a searchable directory of dance groups worldwide, a content hub for dance culture and knowledge, and a unified digital identity for the organisation.

This was a ground-up redesign spanning brand identity, new information architecture, migration of all existing content, and a rebuilt technical infrastructure. The result repositioned the site from an organisational homepage to the world's most comprehensive resource for Ukrainian dance communities.

The redesign prioritised the dance directory as the central feature — a searchable, filterable database of groups worldwide that serves researchers, dancers, and communities looking to connect. The brand identity was strengthened with bold orange accents drawn from Ukrainian folk traditions, complemented by a deeper blue that signals institutional credibility. The website architecture was reorganised around content discovery rather than organisational self-promotion: Dance Groups first, then educational content, events, and opportunities. The migration involved consolidating legacy WordPress content, restructuring it into a clean database, and rebuilding the platform on modern infrastructure capable of scaling as the directory grew. Affiliated projects like Intangible Originals and Melos are featured throughout, reinforcing the ecosystem of cultural work.

The pivotal decision was to stop treating the site as the organisation's homepage and start treating it as the community's tool. The old structure led with who Ukrainian Dance World was; the redesign leads with what a visitor actually came to do — find a dance group. History, education, and events were all demoted to support that single, repeatable task.

That reframing only worked if the directory could be trusted, which made the data migration the real backbone of the project. Years of unstructured WordPress content was audited, de-duplicated, and rebuilt into a clean, queryable database — the unglamorous work that lets the directory filter by country, style, and affiliation and keep standing as entries grow.

The brand had to hold two audiences at once: the dancers and families who respond to cultural warmth, and the institutions and sponsors who need to see credibility. The bold orange carries the folk energy; the deep blue grounds it — a deliberate pairing so the platform reads as both a celebration and an authority.

"The new Ukrainian Dance World is exactly what we needed — a platform that puts the dance community front and centre. Maksym took our vision and built something that actually serves our mission: connecting dance groups, celebrating culture, and creating a real resource for the diaspora."

Brand Redesign

Bold orange and deep blue identity that signals both cultural warmth and institutional credibility — a brand strong enough to anchor a mission-driven platform serving thousands of communities worldwide.

Directory-First Architecture

Rebuilt the entire site structure around a searchable, filterable directory of dance groups — the primary user need. Educational content, events, and opportunities support this central mission rather than competing for attention.

Technical Migration

Complete migration from WordPress with content consolidation, database restructuring, and infrastructure rebuilt for scale. The platform now serves both the global dance community and institutional stakeholders with equal credibility.
