Melos is a self-contained folk performance ensemble founded in 2006 that spans music, song, and dance — embracing all areas of artistic creativity. The group performs at festivals like Folklorama and community events across Winnipeg, bringing traditional and contemporary folk traditions to audiences of all ages.

The brief was to build a website that captures the energy and warmth of the live performance, showcases the ensemble through photography, and gives audiences a clear path to performance dates, recordings, and contact information.

The site is built around the ensemble's most compelling asset — the performers themselves. A photo carousel hero leads with vibrant action shots that immediately communicate the energy and joy of a Melos performance. The navigation is simple and accessible, guiding audiences through About, Gallery, Performances, and Contact without friction. The design balances the celebratory character of folk performance with clear information hierarchy, so a first-time visitor and a returning fan both find what they need in a single visit.

The first decision was to let the ensemble lead with motion rather than words. Folk performance is kinetic — costume, instrument, a room mid-song — and no paragraph carries that the way a photograph does. So the homepage opens on a rotating set of performance shots instead of a written introduction, on the bet that one strong image says more about Melos than a block of copy ever could.

The second was to organise everything around a single question: when can I see them next? For a performing group the calendar is the conversion point, so performance dates sit high in the navigation and are kept simple enough for the ensemble to add a Folklorama slot or a community booking themselves, without coming back to a developer.

The third was restraint. For a multi-generational, all-ages audience the type is set large, contrast kept high, and the palette is pulled from the ensemble's own stage colours rather than imposed — so the site reads as an extension of the group, legible to a grandparent and a teenager alike.

"The website beautifully showcases our ensemble and makes it simple for audiences to find us, see what we do, and connect with upcoming performances. It captures the spirit of what we're about."
